I travel these four blocks almost every weekday on the way to my studio in the Off-the-Avenue building. Traveling by foot or bicycle gives me ample time to observe the interesting aspects of this street. In this short stretch one can find homes, factories, businesses, a neighborhood bar, two organic gardens, a bicycle co-op, an art studio, a storefront church and a former funeral home.

I wondered if I could communicate my fascination with this perhaps overlooked corner of the city through my art. I managed
to print 8 shades of gray before I ran out of wood.
I like to think that I learned many things
after doing this print technique, such as....

*Plan ahead and don't rush just because you're excited about a new method.

*Avoid working on a small scale, too difficult to get detail.

*Printing on damp paper requires a light touch, otherwise the
paper will become embossed with the baren pressure.

*Carve your block much deeper than usual, or the damp paper
will certainly dip into the recessed areas and pick up
unwanted ink.

*Print more copies than you'd expect too, it takes 7-8
prints just to get the ink built up on the block to the desired shade.

So with my one moku hanga print under my belt, I'm ready to
take my new-found knowledge (and respect for the method) to
embark on print #2.

Wood Engraving Workshop with Wesley Bates

Wesley Bates, a world class wood engraver, will teach a three day workshop on
Nov. 6th, 7th & 8th, 2009 in Cincinnati.

The cost per person is $135.00 and includes paper, wood engraving blocks, and use of tools. I felt more
comfortable mixing on the glass slab
and transferring the mixture to the block
with the brush.

Ink/nori mixture is applied to the block
using a circular pattern first, and then brushing across
the wood grain to even it out. It's unlike "normal"
relief printing, because here the ink is so diluted that it
appears that nothing is on the block.
Sumi can be diluted with water to make every
imaginable shade of gray.
This is the fifth shade of gray that I'm printing, and I'll
probably do 2-3 more before I run out of wood.

Pulling a print here. I've made numerous mistakes
working on this block (luckily it's a small one!), but it's been
a valuable learning experience.
My normal way
of working on a block doesn't necessarily work
with this method. I like to use a dremel, which
raises a burr along the cut edge. That usually isn't
a problem, but here the ink/nori mixture
collects on the burr and tends to print darker
than the surrounding area.
It's also tricky determining the amount of
nori to ink ratio. if not enough is used, the ink will
print with a speckled appearance. Too much
and the block surface will get gloppy
and the paper could potentially stick
to the block.

The prints are laid out to dry a bit. The paper
tends to buckle and warp so once they are
almost dry, they get stacked on top of each other
and are pressed under a weight to flatten them out.
No need to worry about ink transferring
from print to print as the ink is absorbed into
the fibers of the paper as apposed to
laying on the surface like an oil based
ink would do.

Conditioning the Maru Bake Brush

The Japanese Maru Bake brush is made of dense, coarse
horse hair embedded in a bamboo handle.
Prior to use, it needs to be conditioned by singeing, and later splitting, the hair
either on a hotplate, or with a flame. I chose the
hotplate method, thinking it would be easier to control.
I tied the bristles together with twine to make it more compact.
The hotplate is somewhat unpredictable in that it never
really got as hot as I wanted. But, eventually
the hair began to singe a bit.

Next, the brush needs to be soaked a bit in clean water
prior to the splitting process.

The brush is then vigorously rubbed on the dragon skin (a perforated metal plate),
rotating it in different directions as you go. I did this for about thirty
minutes before I noticed a difference in
the feel of the bristles. They were somewhat softer than
when I began. This has to be done
periodically as the brush begins to wear down.

•••• • Moku Hanga • ••••

....so for the last few years I've been working on woodcuts,
your basic run-of-the-mill relief type woodcut printmaking
that western printmakers do.
A year or so ago,
I became intrigued with the
Japanese style of woodblock printing called
Moku Hanga.
Unfortunately there aren't any Moku Hanga
workshops in, or around our area. There are a few available
in different parts of the US, but are rather expensive.

So, I recently bought this little info-packed book on the subject...

The book gives basic info on the history, materials and methods of
the technique. Just enough info to get me started....

Essentially, the technique involves using water based ink (or paint)
and mixing the pigment directly on the block with a little
rice paste (known as Nori) using special brushes to spread it across
the block, and then
printing on damp paper.
(The opposite of everything I currently do!)

A few days ago, I received my starter supplies from McClains,

The three brushes in front are (left to right)
Hanga Bake, Maru Bake, Steiner mixing brush.
The first two are used to mix the Nori and ink and spread it
over the block. The mixing brush transfers the ink to the block
from a container.
The large bottle is carbon black Sumi ink, the little container
holds the rice paste.
The wood block in the background holds "dragon skin",
which is a perforated metal plate. It's used to split
and soften the hair on the Maru Bake brush.
That brush is supposed to be singed on a hot plate
and then vigorously rubbed on the dragon skin
for 20-30 minutes to soften the bristles (something I haven't done yet).
In the coming weeks, I hope to do a test block (or several!)
to get a feel for the method before attempting an actual print.
Stay tuned, as I may post images of my first Moku Hanga attempts!

Here are a couple of great Moku Hanga websites
in case you find yourself intrigued by this method...

April Vollmer

Annie Bissett - Woodblock Dreams

David Bull - Tokyo Printmaker

Chicago Based Art Center

LILLSTREET ART CENTER
www.lillstreet.com

When I went to the SGC conference this year I learned about several Printmaking Studios in the country. One that is not too far away and seemed quite versatile and active is LILLSTREET ART CENTER in Chicago. They have a broad range of artist opportunities from residencies, gallery and studio space, education and an outreach program. They have six different departments: ceramics, metalsmithing & jewelry, painting & drawing, printmaking, textiles, and glass. They have a kids program, camps, family workshops, and book parties and private events as well. They do it ALL!

To take a virtual tour of the space in case you ever get the chance to visit or are looking for a reason to make art in a different city check out the link below.

www.lillstreet.com/facility The Selections Committee, composed of six prominent members of the art community, will be announced in the coming weeks. All artists whose work has been selected will be notified by phone or email. If you have not received word by late September, check the “what’s new” section of IPCNY’s website for the list of artists included. PLEASE DO NOT CALL US. Artists and publishers whose work has been selected will be responsible for the framing and delivery of work to IPCNY by October 23, 2009. IPCNY will cover the return cost of delivery within reason. Due to the increased number of international submissions being selected, IPCNY can only contribute $50 dollars on return shipments overseas. Packaging must be provided by the lender for work being shipped outside of New York City. With this 33rd presentation of New Prints, IPCNY continues its role as an ongoing venue for the rotating display of exciting contemporary fine art prints. We look forward to seeing your recent projects. Thank you.

Complete info can be found at -

IPCNY

Dunham Recreation Center and Arts Building

has extended their summer hours now through August 14. You can get into the Arts Building as early as 7:00 am throughout the week by obtaining the key from the Rec.
