Professor Jim Williams has been teaching printmaking at the University of Cincinnati since 1970

, and is the Associate Director of the School of Art. He has been the mentor of many,

many printmakers, now teaching or working artists, over the years.

He has exhibited widely in the US and is in many public and private collections.

Artist's Statement

This latest body of work is created using unorthodox materials;

scraps of wood, metal, plastic, paper and other assorted debris.

These materials are then composed and collaged into an inked surface and then transferred to paper.

Within these micro/macro, metaphoric/biomorphic landscapes, texture and form coalesce.

Striving for a delicate balance the images take on the appearance of hybrid structures dwelling in a state of flux.

They are my search for a visual equivalent to the daily dynamic interplay

that occurs between the manmade and the natural environment.

Gallery Hours are Final Fridays 6 to 9 p.m.

Paper Conservation Workshop @ Berea College

Berea College has been awarded an NEH Preservation Assistance Grant to

conserve a group of objects consisting of WWI posters, Chicago Transit

posters, and WPA posters. With this grant, we will be bringing a paper

conservator, Christine Young, to campus for a three-day visit. Before going

into private practice in Nashville, she worked with the Rocky Mountain

Regional Conservation Center in Denver, the Indiana Historical Society in

Indianapolis, and the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City. As part

of the grant, Christine will be giving a public workshop on the nature,

deterioration, and preservation of art and artifacts on paper.

The workshop will take place on Thursday February 2 from 5 - 7 pm in Room

211 of the Rogers-Traylor Art Building.

There will be a reception following the workshop. Hopefully this event will provide an

opportunity for those who are charged with the care of works on paper

to come together to learn from our guest and one another.

"A twentieth-century master of

collage and printmaking, Romare Bearden (1911–1988)

was also arguably that century’s most influential

African American artist. This is the first exhibition

to focus on Bearden’s printmaking alone.

It includes 75 vividly colored graphic works—etchings,

engravings, aquatints, lithographs,

collagraphs, screenprints, photo projections,

and monotypes—all created over a span of thirty years.

Printmakers have an extensive and unique history of bringing innovation to the field of fine art through new technologies, inventive approaches, and original images. We have also long been an entrepreneurial force in creating small businesses that involve printmaking, such as collaborative print studios, print workshops, print publishers, galleries, letterpress shops, mobile presses, and more. In these spaces that bridge the private act of making art and the public act of running a business, printmakers create, generate, swap, exchange, persuade, transfer, barter, trade, invent, and negotiate. As printmakers we are inherently risk-takers, groundbreakers, innovators, and entrepreneurs.

MAPC 2012 will go back to its small college town roots, where printmakers will explore the innovative River Campus in Cape Girardeau, Missouri at Southeast Missouri State University, the only public institution in the state to have a separate arts campus. Overlooking the Mississippi River and the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge, River Campus will serve as the home base for the conference. Printmakers will also explore Old Town Cape on First Friday and, of course, become familiar with West Park Lanes during the time-honored MAPC Bowling Night.

Have you been wondering where to begin

or have questions on how to execute a

design on a binding?

This is the class for you!

Blind, foil and gold tooling will be demonstrated and you will then have a

chance to begin practicing with guidance and information. Please understand

this is just an introduction, but if you wish to pursue it, we will discuss

where to go and what to do next.

Attaching objects to bindings and various

methods of layering, both raised and recessed, will also be demonstrated.

You will have the opportunity to begin

this exploration as well with guidance and

information to continue experiments

leading to satisfactory results.

Class will take place on Saturday from 1-5PM

and then again on Sunday morning

from 9am-1pm. Materials fee is $50.

Previous experience working with leather in

bookbinding is preferred.

Some preparation for the class will be required in

order to keep the materials fee to a minimum

and allow accomplishing more while

we are together.

Gabrielle Fox is an accomplished artisan in the binding,

conservation and restoration of fine books.

After receiving her B.A.in English Literature and

Writing from the University of Cincinnati she traveled

to England where she received a diploma in

Fine Binding and Conservation

from the Guildford College of Technology in Surrey.

She spent many years in England

and is now based in Cincinnati, traveling often

to advise private collectors and institutions on

their collections. Gabrielle has a strong emphasis

in her work on making and

teaching miniature books. Her bindings have been

exhibited widely and her work

is represented in many private and

public collections both here in the US

and internationally. She is the author of

The Essential Guide to Making Handmade

Books, and is now writing the history of Larkspur Press.

A Girl and her Truck:

"My name is Kyle Durrie. I’m a letterpress printer from Portland, Oregon and
the proprietor of Power and Light Press.
I am inspired by wobbly lines, history, overheard conversations, logs,
whiskey, trains, the color brown, the Wild West, dogs, salt water,
road maps, vintage office supplies, and beards, among other things.
I also love crossword puzzles, swimming in creeks, green chile,
adventures, and occupying small spaces.
But two of my favorite things in the world are printing and road trips.
These two things kept getting in the way of one another in my life,
though; they seemed mutually exclusive.
I wanted to figure out a way to do both things at the same time.

The plan was hatched last year while on a cross country band tour,
studying maps and staring out car windows and exploring new towns
. It was furthered along by listening to lots of songs about
cowboys and truckers. In November 2010, I launched a
fundraising campaign through Kickstarter.com,
which was met with surprising and overwhelming support and success.
I more than doubled my original financial goal, which turned out to be a good thing,
because it turns out I had a very poor understanding
of the costs involved in pulling something like this off.
I’ve converted a 1982 Chevy step van into a fully functional
letterpress print shop. I’ve outfitted the back of the truck with built-in
cabinets and workspace, a sign press from the mid 20th century,
and an 1873 Golding Official No. 3 tabletop platen press.
I’ll spend the next nine or so months driving all over North America
, teaching workshops, doing demos, and generally spreading
the good word about printing the old fashioned way.
And so here we are! What was once but a glimmer in my eye is now a reality.
The tour began in June of 2011 and will continue for upwards of 9 months,
maybe even longer. If you’re interested in learning more about the

to your town, please spend a little time

Translating Nature: Prints by Nancy Friese

Exhibition Dates: October 14 November 11, 2011

The Art Academy of Cincinnati is pleased to present Translating Nature: Prints by Nancy Friese, an exhibition featuring 25 etchings, woodcuts and monoprints. Nancy Friese's landscapes reflect nature's forms using colors, lights, textures and spaces from a chosen view and a specific place. Her painterly monoprints transform traditional landscape into an explosion of lush color and amorphous shapes. The thickly layered clouds suggest receding storms, with the air just clearing. The artist paints her monoprints directly onto a metal plate and then puts them through the press, producing one final print that she further individualizes by adding gouache. The image is built up with the gouache and with layers of colored inks added by sequential passes through the press. The colors overlap and merge, giving the prints the ebullience of watercolors.

Frieses etchings, though more somber, also incorporate distorted tree and cloud forms. Her drawings, which precede the printed images, are often done out of doors and have the same gestural quality that ultimately appears in the prints. The artist says: the sky's light and forms and the land's trees and textures are what I build my composition and mood around."

Frieses paintings and prints have been exhibited in 30 solo shows and 170 group shows, nationally and internationally. The recipient of several prestigious awards, Friese was elected to the National Academy (Museum and School in New York City) and received three National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships, including the Japan-US Friendship Commission Creative Artist Fellowship.

Nancy Friese received a Master of Fine Arts in printmaking from Yale University School of Art and a Certificate of Fine Arts from the Art Academy of Cincinnati, where she studied painting and printmaking. A member of ArtTable, Friese resides in Rhode Island and North Dakota and teaches at Rhode Island School of Design. Her works are in over 100 private collections and 50 corporate and museum collections including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Hammer Museum UCLA, the Spencer Museum of Art and the Portland Art Museum. has announced a

call for entries for their

next exhibition,

"New Prints 2012/Winter"

Deadline for submission is November 25, 2011.

Criteria for selection are:

Only original fine art (limited edition and unique) prints are eligible; reproductions of other artwork such as drawings or paintings are not acceptable.
Selections will represent a broad diversity of sources, geographical and otherwise.
Prints must have been completed within a year of the submission deadline.

The second day of the

Flat Out Fun/Steamroller Event

consisted of
print demos, talks & gallery shows.

First on the schedule was
a woodblock print demo from
David Johnson, from Ball State.

David brought a two sided block, one side
was printed with multiple colors,
and the reverse side was printed
in black. He prefers to use a spoon
instead of a press.

Ray Must, from the
Dayton Print Co-Op, showed examples of
his printmaking talents and
also gave a talk on
Jim Dine's "Temple of Flora"
book of botanical images.

At the
Dayton Visual Arts Center,
artist Nick Satinover gave a talk & demo
on trace monotype.

Wesley Bates Wood Engraving Workshop

at the Art Academy of Cincinnati.

Flat Out Fun, first day.

This past weekend was the

"Flat Out Fun" steamroller print event

hosted by the

Dayton Printmakers co-op.

Members from all five Ohio print groups attended,

it was great to meet some of our fellow Ohio printmakers!

The main event on Friday night was

the steamroller printing. Each co-op had a

4' X 4' linoleum block which was carved by

their members and then printed that evening.

Flat Out Fun steamroller project!

Tiger Lily Press has been invited to participate

in an incredibly exciting project by the

Dayton Printmaker's Cooperative in conjunction with

the Dayton Visual Arts Center.

We received a 4'x4' piece of linoleum

about a month ago and we have been planning

and carving an image to be printed

by a steamroller in FLAT OUT FUN on

Friday October 7th from 3 pm until 9 pm.

Statement on the prints for Clay Street Press

The series of six prints made in the summer of 2011 extends my interest in book illustration from the 19th century and the early 20th century. In this series I have looked at the work of J.J. Grandville from the "Les Fleurs Animées". These works use detailed line and pattern to invent a contemporary drawing vocabulary in reference to the intensely rendered imagery of their originals. The prints are a response to looking at the illustrated works and become a starting point for my own investigations. Referencing these earlier drawings allows me to explore aspects of perception and legibility, the physical qualities of drawn marks, repetition, and the materiality of images on paper. I have looked at the work of Harry Clarke and Kay Nielson in previous series of drawings.

Biography

Carmel Buckley was born in 1956 in Derby, England, and received a BA in sculpture from Newcastle upon Tyne Polytechnic in 1978. She continued her studies in sculpture at the Escuela de Bellas Artes of Madrid University (1978-80) and the San Carlos Academy of Fine Arts in Mexico City (1983-84); she also studied Spanish at the Polytechnic of Central London's Institute of Linguists (1981). She attended the School of Visual Arts, New York as a Fulbright Fellow, receiving her MFA in sculpture in 1988. She has exhibited in various galleries in Britain and the United States, showing her work at Penine Hart Gallery in Manhattan and TennisportArts in Long Island City in 1996, and most recently at the Weston Art Gallery in Cincinnati. Currently an associate professor of Art at The Ohio State Universiry, she taught in the same department as a visiting artist in 1990 and 1992. She has also taught in the Guggenheim Museum's Learning through Art program and at Holloway and Pentonville Prisons and

Newcastle upon Tyne Polytechnic. She received a visual arts fellowship in sculpture from the New York Foundation for the Arts in 1989.

Open Studio is back!

Our Open Studio concept is created so that people

new to the studio get a chance to come in when there

is a monitor available to help them get acquainted with the studio

and to aid them if needed. It is also meant to create

a time for members to use the space while others

are around in order to benefit from

a sense of community and exchange.

Newly interested artists are allowed to

attend two Open Studios FREE OF CHARGE to

"try" the space out before deciding to join.

For members the $5/hour or $50/month studio rate still applies.

Unless you have joined at the $150 rate,

which gets you unlimited studio time for the year.

(New members signing up November 1st or later

receive the rest of this year and the following year.)

This week we will go back to our old method

of signing in for members. There will be a binder there

and each artist will have their own sign-in page so that

dates/hours/$$paid can be kept track of easily.

($150 Members must still sign in)

Payment is expected by the last day of the month.

There will be envelopes, addressed to me,

available again at the studio by next week.

or leave a check with Susan.

Steamroller Printing/ OHIO Print Gathering in Dayton

Friday, October 7 - Saturday, October 8, 2011.

The Dayton Visual Arts Center (DVAC) will host a second statewide printmaker's gathering on October 7 & 8 in downtown Dayton. It will include the following organizations: The Dayton Printmakers Cooperative, Phoenix Rising from Columbus, Studio M from Toledo, Zygote Press from Cleveland and Tiger Lily Press from Cincinnati.

The two-day event will incorporate Steamroller Prints: FLAT-OUT FUN, the second edition of Dayton's public printmaking project and will kick off with a fun filled evening that is free and open to the public. DVAC will offer mini-steamroller prints and Zygote Press will lead Print Pony Gallup and demo the zyPRINT Cart.

STEAMROLLER PRINTING

Each Print organization will carve and print a 4' x 4' print using a steamroller. Susan Naylor is working on the drawing for our print and we have invited a handful of Tiger Lily artists to be part of the carving/design team.

Steamroller printing will begin at 5:00 pm on Friday and go until at least 9:00 pm that evening. Tiger Lily will have a group of people there at 3:00 to begin set up for printing their block and to help all other steamroller printers.

If you would like to help with the printing let us know!

MINI-STEAMROLLER PRINTS

Dayton has 45- 12" x12" linoleum blocks that they are giving to the public, kids and adults, for the cost of $10 each to be carved prior to the event. They will be printed with the steamroller, I would imagine after the larger blocks, using water based ink. The artist of each will receive one of their prints. They are first come, first serve and have to be picked up from Dayton.

If you would like to carve one let me know ASAP. I will collect money and make one trip up to Dayton to pick them up for our studio.

OPEN PORTFOLIO

There will be an Open Portfolio session held adjacent to the Steamroller event at the ThinkTV studios from 5-9 pm. Artists from the Print Co-ops can sell their prints to the public. If you would like to bring/sell prints please let us know and drop them at Tiger Lily by Wednesday, October 5th. All prints should be protected and marked clearly with artist's name and sale price. Tiger Lily will facilitate the sale and reimburse artists the following week. We will not ask for a percentage but will accept donations.

We NEED at least two artists to "man" the portfolio session. Please contact me if you are interested.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 8th

~ David Johnson, of Ball State University, will create a large scale, traditional woodcut relief print by hand, using a spoon and/or baren.

~Master Print Lecture: Ray Must will discuss Jim Dine's book of botanical prints that are in Wright State University's collection. The book will be onsite in the DVAC gallery for viewing. Must was instrumental in its acquisition during his tenure.

~Erin Holscher Almazan, of the University of Dayton, will demonstrate the use of alternative methods of incising plates at the Dayton Printmaker's Co-op. This relates to the Dine book, which is focused on alternative tool usage.

~The DVAC Gallery will exhibit INFINITE LINE, An Exhibition of Prints and Works on Paper by Danielle Rante and Nicole Maury.

All events will conclude by 5:30 on Saturday. More details on specific times will come later.

'Seventeenth century Dutch painters and printmakers

sought to depict chiaroscuro and convey atmospheric depth.

Although a variety of relief and intaglio techniques existed,

a nonlinear graphic process that could

translate painting’s tonal values and

surface textures had eluded artists, engravers and publishers.

Mezzotint is a technique where the artist works from dark to light.

It was discovered in 1642 by an amateur,

Ludwig van Siegen of Utrecht. Drawn from the Art Museum’s permanent collection

this show presents landmarks in the history of mezzotint

from 1642 through its heyday as a reproductive medium in

eighteenth century portraiture in

England through the creative use of the medium today."

Ohio Print Co-op's Greeting Card Swap Opportunity

How will you be celebrating the end of 2011? 

The Dayton Printmaker’s Cooperative invites you to join us in 

“Reigning in the New Year”
a greeting card swap. 


Here are the requirements:

- Must be a member, volunteer,  or contributor to one of the
four Ohio printmaking cooperatives (Tiger Lily/Cincinnati, DPC/Dayton,
Phoenix Rising/Columbus, Zygote/Cleveland) in 2011.

- Specs: paper should measure 6”x8”, folded once to form a 4" x 6"
final product, and use a stiff rag paper or cardstock similar to postcards (at
least 100#)

- Process: any printing process, signed with your name on the inside of the
card. Just as you would a greeting card.

- Edition size: The size of the edition will depend on how many participants join in.

- Cut off date for joining the swap: August 13^th, 2011


- The tentative edition size will be announced after August 14th.
The final edition size of the swap will be announced by September 1st, 2011.
If the edition is too big for you, you will have the opportunity to drop
out before September 1st. 

- Due date for finished postcards: November 12^th, 2011


- Distribution of finished portfolios is slated for the first week of December, 2011(in time for the holidays).
- Cost: $5.00 to cover shipping if you’d like your portfolio sent to you, no
cost if you’re picking it up directly from the Dayton Print Coop.
